Noel Gallagher has described teaming up with his brother Liam in Oasis as the band’s “Achilles heel”.
The guitarist, who had a famously fiery relationship with his singer brother, told Radio 4′s Desert Island Discs the pair were “vastly different”.
He told host Kirsty Young that Liam was “an irritant” when the pair were younger, but initially it helped being brothers in the band.
He said: “When I was saying before about you gain some kind of strength from being in a band with family when everyone around you is a complete stranger, like I also said as time goes on that becomes your Achilles heel because you know how to push each other’s buttons.
“When family members are arguing everybody tends to leave the room so the differences we had, whether it would be with the music or the band or what video we were doing, would never get resolved because nobody would say ‘look you’re right’, everyone would just casually, one at a time, leave the room until you were just stood there arguing about something that just became completely irrelevant”.
Noel, who picked fellow Mancunians The Smiths’ Hand In Glove and A Guy Called Gerald’s Voodoo Ray among his desert island discs, took a guitar as his luxury item.
He also took Jack Kerouac’s 1950s beat generation classic On The Road as his book, telling Young it was the only novel he had ever read.
Gallagher also chose The Beatles’ Ticket To Ride, describing the band as the “the greatest thing in music there ever was”.
